Memex vs Grok Bot: Personal Journaling and Cloud Agent Teams

By Clifford · Product research

Written by Memex Lab. This comparison covers documented capabilities, not a hands-on benchmark. Sources checked on October 11, 2026.

After a conference, you might have twelve receipts, a photo of a whiteboard, and a note about a conversation that changed your plans. Filing the expenses and remembering the conversation are both useful jobs. They do not need the same workspace.

Grok Bot provides durable AI teammates with roles, memory, and a persistent cloud computer. Memex is a device-local personal journal with configurable agents and model APIs. The practical comparison is what each product lets you delegate, retain, and change.

Give the expense job and the personal note different homes

For the conference receipts, a Grok Bot can work across files and connected business tools, prepare a spreadsheet, and leave a submission ready for review. A named Bot can keep that responsibility and its working preferences over time. Its files-and-results guide supports saving generated artifacts.

The whiteboard photo and your private reaction may belong in a personal archive instead. Memex keeps original records alongside generated cards and knowledge files. You can ask an agent to connect the conversation to an older project while retaining your original wording.

In a trial, require two different outputs: a receipt table with totals you can reconcile, and a reflection that points to your own notes without inventing conversation details. Judge each against its source material before adding more tools or automation.

Several Bots do not mean several isolated computers

Grok Bot’s overview says your Bots share one cloud computer, including files, browser sessions, and app logins. Conversations and learned context are separate per Bot, but shared files and handoffs move context between them. Separate roles should not be treated as a security boundary.

This can make cooperation convenient: an expense Bot can leave a spreadsheet for a review Bot. It also means you should decide whether a private reflection belongs on that shared computer before uploading it. The shared-computer model is within one user account; it is not a claim that unrelated users share your files.

Memex’s agent workflow runs in the device app. Choosing a cloud model still sends request context out for inference. Its local record storage does not provide perpetual background availability when the phone or endpoint is unavailable.

Local access and privacy controls need separate checks

Grok Bot can ask to run commands on your local computer; local execution has its own permission setting. Its primary computer remains cloud-hosted. The security documentation distinguishes these controls from Auto Review inside the hosted environment.

The service requires data storage. Training choices follow applicable Cursor account and privacy settings, and the documentation distinguishes supported privacy settings from Legacy Privacy Mode, which Grok Bot does not support. Do not turn a “no training” setting into a claim that nothing is stored or processed remotely.

In Memex, direct provider requests, optional Memex AI proxy access, backup or sync destinations, transcription, and external tools determine the data path. For the private conference note, inspect those settings before asking an agent to summarize it. Open source makes implementation inspection possible; it does not audit every provider for you.

Model control is a documented difference

Cursor manages Grok Bot’s model selection, and its settings page says there is no model picker. The Grok name should not be read as a guarantee that every request runs on one fixed model. Check current serving and usage information when that distinction matters.

Memex supports multiple provider connections and a model per agent. You can use an API key and base URL where supported, or another documented connection method. An Ollama endpoint offers a local inference option on the machine hosting it, which may be a separate computer.

Both products offer reusable workflows. Grok Bot has Skills, routines, and shared Bot templates. Memex adds control over the app’s GPL-3.0 source, custom prompts, agent configuration, and working directories. For a useful experiment, run the same reflection agent with two supported models and compare which claims stay grounded in your saved notes.

Preserve the files and understand the meter

Grok Bot lets you preview and save generated files, so a completed expense spreadsheet can leave the service. That does not establish a portable copy of all learned memory or the entire computer. Its Bot deletion guide says shared files and browser sessions can remain. If the conference job is finished, separately check routines, saved files, and service authorizations before assuming the workspace has been cleared.

Memex documents Markdown record export and full backup/restore. Export a small conference sample and open it outside the app. Check attachment paths and the difference between a readable record and an application backup before relying on a migration.

Grok Bot access can come through eligible Cursor plans or linked Grok/X subscriptions. Weekly included usage and optional on-demand usage matter; the detailed billing page says overlapping grants do not stack. For Memex, model and infrastructure costs depend on your configuration. Compare a week of actual jobs and inspect both spending controls.

Choose the workspace for the job

For the expense report and repeated cross-service work, try a Grok Bot with a clear review boundary. For the conversation you want to remember in your own words, try a Memex record with its original photo or audio attached.

Decide where that private note belongs before the receipt job grows into a larger shared workspace.
