Frequently Asked Questions
What is Memex?
Memex is an open-source, local-first AI journal app for iOS and Android. You capture text, photos, and voice — a multi-agent AI system automatically organizes your records into structured timeline cards, extracts knowledge using the P.A.R.A. method, and surfaces insights across your entries.
How is Memex different from other journal apps?
Unlike Day One, Notion, or Apple Journal, Memex uses AI agents to auto-organize your records — you don't manually tag, categorize, or structure anything. It's also fully open source, local-first, and supports 12+ LLM providers including Ollama for fully offline use.
What does 'bring your own LLM' mean?
Memex doesn't provide the AI model. You connect your own — OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, Kimi, Qwen, Ollama, and more. Your prompts go directly from your device to your chosen provider. We never see your data or API keys.
Is my data private?
Yes. Memex is local-first by design. All records, cards, and knowledge are stored on your device as Markdown files and a local SQLite database. Nothing is uploaded to any server. You can back up to iCloud Drive or a custom folder.
Can I build custom AI agents in Memex?
Yes. Memex includes a custom agent system where you can create your own AI agents with event-driven triggers, custom prompts, JavaScript execution, and inter-agent workflows — all running on your phone.
